Shop for Power

Shopping Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible to access the Shop you must be a current Powershop customer on a residential pricing plan, unless otherwise approved by Powershop. The Shop is not available to Powershop Lite customers and most business customers

How to shop for your power?

Once you’re a Powershop customer you’ll be able to buy power through your account on desktop or through our mobile app. This does not apply to Powershop Lite and most business customers.

We sell power in units that we call Powerpacks. These are for sale in the Shop area of your account. Most types of Powerpacks give you a discount on your Standard Rate for the amount of power covered by the Powerpack, helping you to get great value for money for the power you use.

While you can shop on desktop, using our app is easier. Using the app means you can shop for power anytime, anywhere and monitor your usage on the go.  Best of all, if you’ve got the app notifications turned on, you’ll be notified when Powerpacks arrive in the Shop, so you never miss a chance to save.

To go shopping, log in to your Powershop account from your desktop or mobile app and select ‘Shop’.

What is a Powerpack?

We sell power in units that we call Powerpacks. It’s like buying data for your mobile when you’re on a pay as you go contract. Except its pay as you go power with the ability to buy now and pay later, within your billing period. And most importantly, we don’t cut off your power if you haven’t pre-purchased Powerpacks covering your usage! Win win!

Powerpacks range in price. Most types of Powerpacks give you a discount on your Standard Rates for the amount of power covered by the Powerpack, so you get value for money for the power you use.

You can learn more about the different types of Powerpacks here

You can buy Powerpacks in our online Shop – which you access in the Powershop app or by logging in to your account from your desktop.

For each Powerpack you’ll see:

  • The cost of the pack and the discount on your Standard Rate for the amount of power covered by the pack – making it easy to see what you’re saving.
  • How many days of power we estimate that the pack will give you, based on your usage – see how we calculate your Estimated Usage here.
  • Around how many dollars per day that works out to be, based on the estimate above

Can I buy power after I’ve used it?

Yes! You can buy Powerpacks at any time.

If, at the end of your Account Review period (billing cycle), you’ve used more power than you’ve purchased, you have three options:

Option 1: Log in to your account and buy a Monthly Staying Power, Special or Value Powerpack from the Shop - so that you get the power you need at a discount on your Standard Rate (for the power covered by that Powerpack).

Option 2: Log in to your account and purchase a Top Up Powerpack, for the amount covering the amount of power you’re short,  to the nearest whole dollar – this will be charged at your Standard Rate. Which is still very good!

Option 3: Do nothing and the system will automatically buy your default Powerpack for you, to cover your power used.  For most customers, this will be equal to the power you have used at your Standard Rate.

This means you never need to worry about being in arrears as we’ll settle your account at the end of each billing cycle.  Or, if you forget to buy enough Powerpacks to cover your usage, it’s no problem.

What are the different types of Powerpacks?

Knowing about the different types of Powerpacks will help you understand what to buy and how to maximise your savings by reaching your Special Rates.

1. Monthly Staying Power

On the first of every month, we release a new monthly Powerpack called Staying Power, which stays in your Shop all month. It has the biggest discount out of all our Powerpacks (compared to your Standard Rate, for the amount of power covered).

The Staying Power Powerpack will give you about a week's worth of power, based on your usage – read more about how we calculate your Estimated Usage here.

The longer you’ve been with us the bigger the discount you get!

Hell yeah, that’s right, we reward you for your loyalty! Newbies get a 20% discount the first year and it increases by 1% each year you’re with us, up to a maximum of 25% discount after five years.

Buying Staying Power helps you reach your Special Rates.

2. Specials

Almost every week we release a Special Powerpack, (which we also call Specials). These have the second biggest discount after Staying Power.

They are smaller value Powerpacks that are discounted and are only available for a limited time in the Shop. If you have the app and have the notifications turned on, you’ll receive a notification to let you know when a Special has been released. Desktop users can see Specials by checking the Shop once logged in. We’ll always let you know a new Special has been released on our Facebook page, so don’t forget to follow us. Buying Specials will help you reach your Special Rates.

3. Future Packs
Future Packs allow you to squirrel away power for the months to come. The further out you buy Future Packs, the bigger the discount on your Standard Rate (for the amount of power covered by that Future Pack). Buy a Future Pack six months in advance to get the maximum 10% discount, five months out and get 8%, four months out and get 6% and so on.

For example, if it’s December you can buy two Future Packs for the month of June (which is six months out) you’ll get a 10% discount on your Standard Rates for the power covered by the June Future Pack. This power will then sit in your account till June when you come to use it. That’s how Future Packs help you budget and save.

As well as scoring the maximum discount, buying Future Packs six months ahead also helps spread your power costs more evenly across the year.

TOP TIPS:

  • Using Future packs to pre-purchase a portion of your winter power in the summer is a winning strategy! You’ll be able to get the maximum 10% discount on your Standard Rate for the power covered by the Future Pack and it’ll help you offset the cost of your winter power in advance.
  • You can buy TWO Future Packs for each future month.

How to find Future Packs in the Shop

Scroll across on the tracking donut and it will show you your Estimated Usage for the coming months. Under the donut you will see the Future Packs displayed.

Alternatively in the menu drop down, select Shop and scroll down to the bottom of the list of Powerpacks. Future Packs are on the bottom of the list.

Paying for Future Packs

You can pay for a Future Pack at the time you buy it from the Shop.  Alternatively, you can pay for a Future Pack at any other time within the Account Review period (billing period) in which you buy the Future Pack, even though you’re only going to use that power in the future.

Value Packs

Our fixed-price Value Packs are always in the shop. They give you the smallest discount off your Standard Rate out of all the Powerpacks for the power covered by that Value Pack, but they come in a range of sizes to suit your power needs.

Top Up Packs

Our Top Up Packs allow you to buy a specific amount of power (to the nearest whole $) at your Standard Rate, with no discount.

Our Standard Rate Top Up pack gives you just that, power priced at your Standard Rate.

How do I pay for Powerpacks?

When you confirm that you want to buy a Powerpack in the Shop, the default option will be to complete the transaction using your preferred payment method. You can nominate either a direct debit, debit card or credit card as your preferred payment method. Please note a 0.76% processing fee applies for credit card and debit card transactions.

You can override this option and pay using internet banking, if you like. Our bank details can be found here.

Update your payment method

You can set up and edit your preferred payment method yourself.

  • Mobile app: Go to ‘Account details’ in the menu then select ‘Preferred payment method’.
  • Desktop: Go to ‘Account Preferences’ in your ‘Settings’ in your desktop account.

Can I turn off Powerpack purchase confirmation email?

Yes. If you’d rather not receive these emails, simply log in to your desktop account. Go to ‘Settings’, then ‘Alerts’, untick the ‘Purchase notification’ option, and the job’s done.

You’ll still be able to keep track of the Powerpacks you’ve bought under the ‘Transactions’ tab in your desktop account and in the ‘Account history’ section of the mobile app (three quarters of the way down the main menu, under ‘Your property’). We will also include a tax invoice for each Powerpack you have purchased in the PDF attached to your Account Review email.

How do I know what Powerpacks I should buy?

Once you’re logged into your account, it's easy to see how much power you’ve used versus the power you’ve bought. The inside green circle shows the power you’ve bought. The pink circle on the outside shows the power you’ve used.

In the centre of the circle, you can clearly see if you have bought enough power (ahead) or not (behind), based on our estimates for you. If you click the centre, it will show you how many days you’re ahead or behind, based on our estimates for you.  See how we calculate your Estimated Usage here.

See how many days' worth of power the Powerpack you’re planning to buy should last

When you put a Powerpack in your cart, we’ll show you how many days it is likely to last based on your usage before you pay for it.

On the app, the green circle will increase to show you how much additional power the Powerpack in your cart will give you. You’ll also see the information in the centre of the circle update, which will show you how ahead or behind you’ll be by purchasing that specific Powerpack.

On desktop the Power Organiser will show you how many days it is likely to last.

You’ll quickly get a feel for how much power you normally use. Our online tools will also help with that.

How to maximise your savings through the Shop

If you’re looking to make the most savings, we’ll tell you how! Unlike the Colonel’s herbs and spices, we’re not keeping our recipe for how to get the best deal on your power a secret.

How to reach your Special Rates

If you don’t buy any Powerpacks, you will, as a default, pay Standard Rates for the power you use.

To reach your Special Rates you need to buy the Monthly Staying Power Powerpack and all the limited time Specials released within your Account Review period (billing period).

Your Special Rates will be what you pay if your actual usage matches your Estimated Usage for an Account Review period.

How to maximise your savings

To get even more savings on top of your Special Rates buy two Future Packs six months out when they have the max 10% discount and then if you need a top up grab a Value Pack so you still get a discount on your Standard Rate, on any additional power you need.

In summary: Staying Power + Specials + Future Packs + Value Packs (if needed) = MAX SAVINGS.

If you’ve purchased more power than you need, it will automatically be allocated to your account for next month. Meaning you never lose out on the power you’ve bought.

Want more detail?

Here’s the secret recipe explained.

Step 1: On the first of every month, we release a new monthly Powerpack called Staying Power. It will give you the biggest discount on your Standard Rate for the power covered by the Powerpack – which we’ve estimated will give you about a week's worth of discounted power (based on your usage – see how we calculate your Estimated Usage). The longer you’ve been with us, the higher the discount on your Standard Rate!

Hell yeah, that’s right, we reward you for your loyalty! Newbies get 20% off the Standard Rate the first year and it increases by 1% each year you’re with us, up to 25% off the Standard Rate after five years.

Buying the Monthly Staying Power Powerpack helps you reach your Special Rates.

Step 2: Almost every week we release a limited time Special. These give you the second biggest discount on your Standard Rate for the power covered by the Special.

They are smaller value Powerpacks and are only available for a limited time in the Shop. If you have the app and have notifications turned on, you’ll receive a notification to let you know when a Special has been released in the shop. Desktop users can see limited time Specials by checking the Shop once logged in. We’ll always let you know when a new Special has been released on our Facebook page, so don’t forget to follow us.

Buying every Special that is released within your billing cycle with the monthly Staying Power pack will get you to your Special Rates.

Because we’re a creative bunch, we like to make Specials fun by giving you a giggle. Who says power has to be boring!

Step 3: If you can, it’s a good idea to buy power in advance by buying Future Packs. The further out you buy Future Packs, the more discount you get on your Standard Rate for the amount of power covered by the Future Pack!

TOP TIPS:

-    Using Future packs to pre-purchase a portion of your winter power in the summer is a winning strategy! You’ll be able to get the maximum 10% discount on your Standard Rate for the power covered by the Future Pack and it’ll help you offset the cost of your winter power in advance.

-    You can buy TWO Future Packs for each future month.

Step 4: Depending on how much power you use; you may need to buy an extra Powerpack to cover your usage. That’s where Value Packs come in.

Each Value Pack has a fixed price and they’re always in the Shop, so you can buy exactly what you need, when you need it. Value Packs give you the smallest discount on your Standard Rate for the amount of power covered by the Value Pack. But they’re still great and still discounted against your Standard Rate.

And that’s the magic formula. The power is in your hands to shop and save.

Don’t forget, you can always grab Powerpacks when they are released and then pay for them later in your billing cycle using our ‘Buy now, pay later’ feature. Learn more about ‘Buy now, Pay later’ here.

What if I buy too much power?

If you’ve purchased more power than you need, it will automatically be allocated to your account for next month. Meaning you never lose out on the power you’ve bought.

Do I need to buy power before I go away? Or what if my internet is down and I can’t buy power?

Don’t worry.  If at the end of your Account Review period (billing period) your usage exceeds the power you’ve pre-purchased through Powerpacks, we’ll buy your default Powerpack for you, to cover your power used.  For most customers, this will be equal to the power you have used at your Standard Rate.

We’ll email you to let you know the date the money will be debited from your account. Download our mobile app if you would also like to get a mobile alert a few days before we’re about to make a transaction.
